As the largest U.S. College of Engineering, we will be an exemplary leader in technological education, research and service that anticipates, and meets, the needs of tomorrow's world.
COE Mission
The College of Engineering (COE) must define engineering education in a changing world. The term engineering education is used to include undergraduate and graduate education; the creation and application of new knowledge that is rapidly infused into our curricula; and a liberal education that integrates engineering, the life sciences, and the humanities in an increasingly technological world. The responsibility of COE is to provide a national and international undergraduate education that prepares graduates for a career in engineering or other professions such as medicine, law, business, and public policy. Graduate engineers should be ready to contribute to the global workforce immediately upon graduation and should be able to “hit the ground running”.
Research and public and professional service should mirror this responsibility. COE must strive to identify research that matters – research that addresses the big challenges in the world. COE engineers should care about issues where technology can make a difference, whether these issues are health, security, economic well being, or the sustainability of the world and values. The College will adopt a discovery-to-application philosophy using basic research and discovery as the foundation and then translate this research into useful applications to benefit society as a whole. To this end, the college must assemble a body of faculty who exemplify excellence and innovation in pursuit and delivery of knowledge in these areas.
To educate engineers who care, the College should become the leader in engineering education, emphasizing learning, encouraging interdisciplinary study and preparing our graduates to be “Engineers of 2020.” COE should strive to perform premier research in areas of global significance: the environment, energy resources, health technologies & systems, and national/international security, as well as, provide a comprehensive education to a diverse student body led by a diverse world-class faculty. COE should strive to hire, train and retain staff who will support the education and research efforts of the students and faculty.
Lastly, the College will provide a scholarly and professional environment that enables faculty, students and staff to make lasting contributions to the advancement of knowledge , the creative and innovative practice of engineering, and improvement of the quality of life for society as a whole.
