Summer Engineering Institute

LEAD program for EngineeringFor 5 years the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech has partnered with Leadership Education And Development (LEAD) to offer a 3-week residential Summer Engineering Institute (SEI) which focuses on under-represented minority rising 11th and 12th graders from across the nation. The goal of the Georgia Tech LEAD program is to provide innovative and integrated world-class educational leadership programs that prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.

The focus of SEI is on a major project which teaches students some of the basic engineering and computer science techniques using programs such as HOMER, MATLAB and Google Sketch-up. High school students are challenged to solve real-world engineering problems with hands on experience. Students have worked on projects such as: Green House, Water Quality Testing and Water Filtration; Food Refrigeration with Renewable Energy-Overview; and Aerial Surveillance, Sensing, and Communication. Members of Tech’s faculty, staff and students assist the students during their three-week stay on campus.

The students work in teams to plan, design, and research the economical and social impacts of a selected engineering problem, as well as participate in corporate visits, laboratory tours, and collegiate/skill workshops.

The participants are involved in corporate visits, evening workshops, and “Fireside Chats” such as visits with industry representatives. Classroom lectures concentrated on topics such as electrical engineering and designed systems; mechanical engineering emphasizing designing machines and gadgets; computer engineering and database design and data communications; and civil engineering with an emphasis on architecture to solve problems of project planning, site planning and building design.

The LEAD Program at Georgia Tech compliments the institution's outstanding academic programs by providing instruction to undergraduates in the kinds of knowledge and skills essential to becoming visionary and skilled leaders. The LEAD Program assumes that leadership is an observable and learnable set of practices and that provided the opportunity for proper instruction and practice, every student with persistence can substantially improve their leadership abilities. The students work in teams to plan, design, and research the economical and social impacts of a selected engineering problem, as well as participate in corporate visits, laboratory tours, and collegiate/skill workshops. National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC)

For over 20 years, the National Student Leadership Conference has invited a select group of outstanding high school students to participate in its fast-paced, high-level, interactive summer sessions. This summer the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech is collaborating with NSLC to host two 2-week summer engineering programs for students in high school. Students must be attending 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade and maintaining at least a “B” average at the time of enrollment.

For more information visit the NSLC website.
