Professional Mentoring Program

In the fall of 2007, WIE, in collaboration with Georgia Power Company initiated a pilot Professional Mentoring Program.  The purpose of this program is to provide female undergraduate engineering students access to professional female engineers who could serve as their mentors, giving academic and professional advice and friendship.

The mentors were drawn from Georgia Power Company’s “Affinity Group” of professional female engineers.  Students were selected from the College of Engineering based on the backgrounds, personal and professional interests of the mentors.

The program was launched at an all day workshop, held on September 22, where mentors and protégés met and through participation in the RightPath personal and professional assessment process, began to build the foundations for their mentoring relationship.

The mentors and protégés have weekly contact, the initiation of which alternates between the protégé and mentor week by week.  A program wide event on Professional Imaging will be held on December 5, 2007.  It is expected that this pilot program will serve as a springboard for an expanded future program, which will draw in Georgia Tech alumnae and other WIE corporate partners.
