Feature Article: Getting to know the College of Engineering
Educating Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s World
Welcome to the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech. Throughout the ages, engineers have found creative solutions to the challenges that face society, from the Roman aqueducts to the use of electric power, and from the telegraph to microwave signals from outer space. Engineers are essential to our lives — they help design and create everything from cars to computer chips. In the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech, we are helping educate a new generation of engineers who will continue to use their education to improve people's lives and this will result in knowledge that will benefit our global community.
Our students represent the next generation of engineers who dare to dream. Some have specific goals: They wish to cure diseases, or reduce pollution, or find new energy sources; or they dream of developing the next laser, labor-saving device, or vehicle for space travel. Even as undergraduates, our engineering majors participate in groundbreaking research and development. Our continually expanding cutting-edge research is a true reflection of faculty expertise, and our undergraduate and graduate students benefit from the diversity of classroom and laboratory experiences that this research provides.
We also give our students a chance to gain exposure to an environment in which they can pursue interests that would normally be unattainable elsewhere. Students can do this by being a participant in such groups as GT Motorsports, a student research and development team who designs, builds and test racing vehicles in the annual Formula SAE competition. Perhaps your interests are more futuristic. RoboJackets is a group of Georgia Tech students, faculty, and alumni that aims to enhance the understanding of the field of robotics and its applications in depth of knowledge. Looking to solving global problems? Our Engineering Students Without Borders create sustainable solutions for third world countries and volunteer work around Atlanta and on campus. Whatever your interests, whether they be the Society of Hispanic Engineers or the Illuminating Engineering Society, there are activities and programs that let students explore outside the classroom.
» Large, diverse student population

In the College of Engineering our goal is to provide students the opportunity to utilize their theoretical knowledge in real-life situations. The analytical and problem-solving abilities gained through an engineering education are of great value in a wide range of occupations. Georgia Tech is a place where students get more than an excellent engineering education. It is place where today’s students are developed as tomorrow’s thinkers, leaders, and creators who can succeed in and manage our extraordinarily complex world.
