LEAD Summer Institute to Begin at Georgia Tech

Lead Program for Engineering logoThe LEAD (Leadership, Education and Development) Program has chosen Georgia Tech to host the inaugural Summer Engineering Institute in 2008. The Summer Engineering Institute (SEI) at Georgia Tech this year will place 30 students on the Tech campus for a three-week residency. Google signed on early in the LEAD Engineer’s sponsor research process and has pledged $1.27 million in support of the program. In Addition, DuPont, the science-based products and services company, has also signed on as LEAD Engineering sponsor and will support the first three years of the SEI rollout.

The Summer Engineering Institute at Tech will focus on 10th grade students, split evenly by gender. The Lead Engineering curriculum will focus on electrical, mechanical, computer and civil engineering while also incorporating associated disciplines such as chemical, biotech, biomolecular, materials science, aerospace, polymer-textile and fiber, and technological systems students. In addition to classroom lectures, each week students will also have sessions on the admission process, financial aid/scholarships, and a variety of non-academic concerns.

LEAD was founded in 1980 to inspire talented high school students from diverse backgrounds to initially pursue careers in corporate America. In response to sponsors and applicants, LEAD expanded the program to now include technical fields. LEAD Engineering is designed to model the successful business model to now partner with the top 50 undergraduate engineering programs in the U.S.
