Sparks Forum in Ethics and Engineering

Dr. Dennis S. Mileti
The George H. and Faye C. Sparks Forum in Ethics and Engineering will be held on March 25, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the Clary Theater of the Student Success Center on the campus of Georgia Tech. Dr. Dennis S. Mileti, professor emeritus at the University of Colorado Boulder, will speak on “Levee Failures in New Orleans: Root Causes, Solutions and Implications for the Engineering Community.”
Dr. Mileti is the author of more than 100 publications, most on the societal aspects of hazards and disasters. His book, Disasters by Design, summarizes our nation’s effort to assess knowledge and national policy for hazards and disasters. In his remarks, Dr. Mileti will take an interdisciplinary, systemic, and action-focused approach to understanding the levee failures in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, cataloguing the root causes of those failures and the implications they have for engineers.
The Sparks forum is supported by the Sparks Memorial Fund, the College of Engineering, the GT Foundation, the Ivan Allen College, and the School of Public Policy and organized by the Center for Ethics and Technology at Georgia Tech.
