Tech Tower

Co-founded by Georgia Tech Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Mark Allen, CardioMEMS is an Atlanta-based medical technology company that has developed and is commercializing a proprietary wireless sensing and communication technology for the human body.

The company is a graduate of Georgia Tech's ATDC startup accelerator and their primary product, which is a paperclip-sized implantable monitoring device for heart patients, was developed from research conducted at Tech.

Due to their small size, durability, and lack of wires and batteries, CardioMEMS sensors are designed to be permanently implanted into the cardiovascular system. Using  radio frequency, or RF, energy, the sensors transmit real-time data to an external electronics module, which then communicates this information to the patient’s physician. The result is a system which provides physicians with more information while simultaneously making monitoring less intrusive for patients.

Dr. Allen serves as the company's Chief Technology Officer and Director and has been employed by Georgia Tech since 1989. He is currently the Joseph M. Pettit Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and also directs the Institute's microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) research programs.

"We are honored to be recognized by Intel, a leader in innovative solutions,” said Dr. Jay Yadav, CEO of CardioMEMS upon receiving the award. “This is a testament to the extraordinary efforts of the CardioMEMS team to generate precise, timely, actionable information to address the tremendous burden heart failure places on the U.S. healthcare system and on patients suffering from this debilitating disease. We are fortunate to have the considerable support of the Technology Association of Georgia, the Metro Atlanta Chamber and the Georgia Department of Economic Development as we continue to bring CardioMEMS’ revolutionary technology to market.”
